China urged Iran and the United States on June 22 to preserve momentum in their talks and keep working toward further progress, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said.

Guo made the remarks at a regular press briefing when asked about Iran-US talks in Switzerland. He said China supported mediation efforts by Pakistan, Qatar and other parties.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said “progress” had been made after the first day of talks between senior US and Iranian officials.

The talks opened under tension after US President Donald Trump threatened to resume attacks on Iran.

Pakistan and Qatar said in a joint statement that Washington and Tehran had agreed on a roadmap toward a final agreement within 60 days.

China hopes that Iran and the United States will maintain the momentum of negotiations and continue to make concerted efforts to achieve positive progress in the talks, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said on Monday.

The joint statement said technical-level discussions would continue through the week.

The Lebanon conflict involving Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah remained a key focus of the talks.

Araghchi said Pakistani and Qatari mediation had delivered major progress toward ending the Lebanon war.

The joint statement said Washington and Tehran agreed to establish a communication line to prevent incidents in the Strait of Hormuz.

It also said the sides would create a de-conflict cell with Lebanon’s government to support the end of military operations there.
