Islamabad, Pakistan: Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari said provinces would not face further deductions beyond an agreed three-year defence contribution, while his NFC Award remarks stressed protected provincial shares.

Bilawal made the statement during the National Assembly budget session. He said the federal government and provinces had agreed to share the burden of “unusual national necessities.”

The PPP chairman said the arrangement would last for three years. He added that no additional provincial share would be demanded after that period.

The National Finance Commission Award formula remained unchanged. Bilawal said provincial governments had repeatedly made sacrifices in the national interest.

Bilawal said both the federation and the provinces were facing serious financial pressure. He said Pakistan needed economic projects that could support sustainable growth.

The PPP chairman also welcomed Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s decision to contribute in the national interest. He said the province had set aside political differences and praised the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf stance on the floor of the House.

Bilawal warned that Pakistan’s financial model still depended on borrowing to repay borrowing. He said the country needed a stronger growth path to reduce that dependence.

On regional diplomacy, Bilawal welcomed the preliminary Iran-US peace deal mediated through Pakistan. He congratulated President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif over efforts to promote regional peace.

Bilawal also defended the Benazir Income Support Programme and criticised campaigns against it. He urged protesters in Azad Jammu and Kashmir to end demonstrations peacefully, saying unrest was damaging Pakistan’s image and the Kashmir cause.
