A Balingasay earthquake measuring magnitude 5.0 struck the Philippines on Wednesday, with no tsunami warning issued, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre said.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre, or EMSC, recorded the tremor on June 24 at 10:04 am local time.

The quake’s epicentre was about 75 kilometres west of the coastal area of Balingasay, according to EMSC data. The monitoring centre said the earthquake struck at a depth of 10 kilometres.

Preliminary data showed no reports of casualties after the tremor. Authorities also did not report infrastructure damage in the initial update. No tsunami warning followed the quake. The absence of an alert reduced the immediate risk of a coastal emergency near the affected area.

The Balingasay earthquake occurred in a seismically active region. The Philippines lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, where earthquakes and volcanic activity occur frequently.

Authorities had not announced evacuations. The first update also did not mention damage to homes, roads, ports or public buildings.

The EMSC report provided the first confirmed details on the quake’s strength, timing, depth and location. Officials were expected to continue checking nearby areas for possible after-effects after the initial assessment.

Earthquake updates can change as monitoring agencies review more seismic data. Early reports often focus first on magnitude, depth, epicentre and tsunami-warning status.
