GLASGOW, Scotland: Arshad Nadeem began his Commonwealth Games men’s javelin title defence at Scotstoun Stadium on Friday after qualifying seventh with a 78.63-metre throw.

The medal final started at 8:15 pm local time, or 12:15 am Saturday in Pakistan.

Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage entered the final as the leading qualifier after recording 82.84 metres. Grenada’s Anderson Peters placed second with 81.29 metres, while South Africa’s Douw Smit finished third with 80.64 metres.

India’s Neeraj Chopra advanced in fifth place after throwing 79.61 metres. Australia’s Cameron McEntyre finished sixth with 78.91 metres, immediately ahead of Nadeem.

No competitor reached the automatic qualifying standard of 84 metres during Thursday’s three-round qualification. The 12 athletes with the longest throws progressed instead.

Nadeem told the Glasgow 2026 organisers that strong winds affected his performance. He said his priority during qualification was securing a place in the final.

Pakistan’s Yasir Sultan missed the final after placing 14th with a best throw of 74.36 metres.

Nadeem won the 2022 Commonwealth title in Birmingham with a Games record throw of 90.18 metres. He later set an Olympic record of 92.97 metres while winning gold at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
