Apple is reportedly exploring integrating DeepSeek’s AI models into Apple Intelligence. This could enable the rollout of its AI features in China, where regulatory hurdles have prevented their release.

According to a tipster from Guangdong, Apple is testing DeepSeek R1, a reasoning-focused AI model developed by the Chinese firm, as an alternative to its native AI models.

Why DeepSeek R1?

China enforces strict regulations requiring all AI-powered devices, software, and platforms to obtain government certification. No foreign AI models or those not hosted on Chinese servers have been approved. This has prevented Apple from launching its AI features in China with the iOS 18.1 update, contributing to a significant drop in iPhone 16 series sales, which were heavily marketed around Apple Intelligence.

China’s open-source AI model, DeepSeek, sent shockwaves through the U.S. stock market last week!

The "Magnificent Seven" tech giants, Apple, Nvidia, Tesla, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, and Alphabet saw losses, with Nvidia plunging nearly 17%—a Wall Street record.

The DeepSeek R1 model, open-source and licensed under MIT, offers a potential solution. Since it was developed in China, it is more likely to gain regulatory approval. Additionally, its availability in the public domain allows Apple to use it as an on-device model, eliminating the need for third-party servers and enhancing user data security.

Benefits of DeepSeek Integration

If Apple integrates DeepSeek R1, it could address two major challenges:

  1. Regulatory Compliance: The model’s Chinese origin increases the likelihood of government approval.
  2. Data Security: Using DeepSeek R1 on-device ensures user data remains secure, avoiding reliance on external servers.

The tipster also suggested that Apple could extend this integration to Europe and the US, where Apple Intelligence is currently unavailable, due to the model’s low API costs and local inference capabilities.

According to the tipster, the integration is unlikely to be rolled out before the iOS 19 update. However, it’s important to note that this information comes from a single source and has not been officially confirmed by Apple.

🤖 #DeepSeek's AI model R1 is outpacing #ChatGPT on the Apple Store with its efficiency and problem-solving prowess.

As AI becomes more efficient, expect smarter automation, faster transactions, and enhanced security in crypto. ⚡️💰

By leveraging DeepSeek R1, Apple could overcome regulatory barriers and expand its AI features to one of its largest markets. This move would boost iPhone sales and strengthen Apple’s position in the competitive AI landscape.
