Ashley St. Clair has filed a lawsuit against xAI, alleging that the company’s AI chatbot generated non-consensual sexually explicit deepfakes of her.
The lawsuit, filed in New York, claims that xAI’s generative AI product created and distributed explicit content without her consent. Moreover, the filing states that the chatbot was used to “undress, humiliate, and sexually exploit victims.” This resulted in severe emotional distress and loss of privacy.
St. Clair, a 27-year-old writer and political commentator, is also the mother of one of Elon Musk’s children. In her complaint, she alleges that the AI produced “countless sexually abusive, intimate, and degrading” images of her. This happened even after she explicitly told the system that she did not consent.
The lawsuit further claims that users on X prompted the chatbot to generate explicit images using photographs of St. Clair from when she was 14 years old. As a result, concerns around safeguards for minors and consent have intensified.

The legal action follows xAI’s recent announcement that it would restrict the chatbot from editing images of real people in revealing clothing. This change came after global backlash over the generation of sexualised deepfake images. These images involved both adults and children.
Speaking on CNN, St. Clair criticised xAI’s response, saying the company had failed to address the issue at scale. She argued that meaningful safeguards were still missing despite public assurances.

Musk responded separately on X, stating that he was not aware of any underage nude images being generated. He also insisted that the chatbot would refuse to produce illegal content.
St. Clair is seeking a jury trial and financial damages, citing emotional harm and violations of her privacy. The case also unfolds against the backdrop of previous public disputes between St. Clair and Musk. This includes disagreements over custody of their child.

The lawsuit adds to mounting legal and ethical scrutiny around generative AI tools and deepfakes. Additionally, it raises questions about tech companies’ responsibility to prevent the misuse of powerful image-generation systems.
