The Golden State Warriors are making headlines as the NBA trade deadline on February 6 approaches.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, General Manager Mike Dunleavy actively seeks a star player to team up with Stephen Curry and Draymond Green.
Charania stated on “NBA Today,” “The Warriors are really hunting for a star a playmaker, a scorer who can align with Stephen Curry.”
Although no deals have been finalised, the Warriors have shown interest in big names like Lauri Markkanen of the Utah Jazz and Paul George of the Los Angeles Clippers.
Despite not securing these targets, the team’s recent signings Buddy Hield, Kyle Anderson, De’Anthony Melton, and Lindy Waters have all made notable contributions in the early part of the 2024/25 season. Yet, the team’s quest for a third star continues as they aim for another championship run.

Jonathan Kuminga as a Potential Star
Internally, Jonathan Kuminga might be the player the Warriors need. The seventh overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, Kuminga delivered a career-high 33 points in a recent 99-93 win over the Houston Rockets. This performance has sparked discussions about his potential to be the team’s third star.
Charania asked, “Will the Warriors find that star externally, or will it be an in-house talent like Jonathan Kuminga?”
Kuminga’s development has been closely watched, particularly his dynamic with head coach Steve Kerr. Charania highlighted that Kuminga’s increased responsibilities on the court have led to higher productivity, hinting he might be ready for a more prominent role.
However, consistency is Kuminga’s biggest challenge. Despite his impressive performance against Houston, his overall game performance has varied. As the Warriors continue their search for a star to complement Curry, Kuminga’s future contributions remain critical in team strategy discussions.
