The United States is looking to strengthen its ties with Pakistan. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has stated that Washington sees a clear opportunity to expand its strategic relationship with Islamabad.

During a press briefing, Rubio emphasised that this renewed engagement is a separate effort. It is not intended to come at the expense of America’s strong friendship with India.

When asked if India had expressed concern, Rubio acknowledged the historical tensions between Pakistan and India. However, he stated that India understands the US must maintain relationships with multiple partners in the region.

He described America’s relationship with India as “deep, historic, and important.” The goal with Pakistan is to build a partnership based on common interests, not to replace existing alliances.

Secretary Rubio clarified that the push for closer ties began before recent regional tensions. The US has expressed a long-standing interest in rebuilding a strategic partnership.

He noted that both countries have a history of cooperation, particularly in counterterrorism. Washington is now keen to expand this relationship beyond just security matters.

This statement comes amid improved relations. This follows a prolonged diplomatic chill between the two nations. The improved relationship has been built on recent cooperation. Key moments include Pakistan’s handover of a wanted ISIS operative to the US.

Furthermore, President Trump’s role in brokering a ceasefire between Pakistan and India after a military standoff was a significant diplomatic achievement. This has contributed to a more positive and collaborative atmosphere.
