WASHINGTON: Three US officials said eight Marines were injured when an Iranian anti-ship cruise missile struck their vessel in the Strait of Hormuz on September 14.

NBC News reported that the Marines suffered smoke inhalation and possible traumatic brain injuries. Their symptoms included headaches consistent with concussions.

Officials said none suffered serious injuries. All eight returned to duty soon afterwards. Seven were enlisted Marines and one was an officer serving with a battalion landing team when the missile reportedly hit.

Officials said the Marines were not aboard a US Navy ship. However, they declined to identify the vessel or specify its type.
