On July 30, 2025, President Donald Trump expressed optimism about ongoing trade talks with China, stating at the White House that both nations are on track for a “very fair deal.”

Trump’s comments followed a five-hour meeting between U.S. and Chinese officials in Stockholm on July 28, aimed at resolving their long-standing trade dispute and extending a three-month tariff truce.

Trump told reporters, “We’re moving along with China. We’re doing fine with China,” emphasising steady progress. The talks come ahead of an August 12 deadline to secure a lasting tariff agreement, building on preliminary deals from May and June 2025 that halted escalating tit-for-tat tariffs and addressed rare earth mineral restrictions. The negotiations aim to stabilise economic relations between the two global powers.

The Trump administration has secured trade agreements with the European Union, Britain, and Japan, and is actively negotiating with other nations. These efforts reflect a broader push to reshape global trade dynamics in favour of U.S. interests, with China remaining a critical focus due to its economic influence.
