WASHINGTON: President Xi Jinping of China urged deeper communication and regular military dialogue with the United States during a White House US-China summit with President Donald Trump on Thursday.
Xi said both countries should coexist peacefully and improve crisis communication and prevention mechanisms. He argued that cooperation would benefit both sides, while confrontation would leave both worse off.
“The Thucydides trap can be overcome,” Xi said. He used the phrase to describe the danger that rivalry between an emerging and established power could slide towards war.
Trump said the visit would cover security, technology and artificial intelligence. He also pointed to efforts to improve market access for American farmers and ranchers.

Meanwhile, Xi proposed inviting 100,000 young Americans to China on student exchanges. He called for continued dialogue to build trust and manage differences between Washington and Beijing.
The leaders held bilateral talks after the White House welcome ceremony. Xi described their earlier understanding as an effort to build strategic stability while managing competition and disagreements.
Later on Thursday, Xi said discussions during the visit had produced common understanding on a range of issues. Xi Jinping urged regular military dialogue and stronger crisis-management mechanisms during talks with Donald Trump at the White House.

Xi invoked the phrase in his meeting with Trump in Beijing in May, asking the US president how he planned to avoid it. His proposals for lessening tensions – which also included the invitation of 100,000 young Americans to visit China on student exchanges
This comes amid intense competition between the two powers over artificial intelligence and trade, with each side imposing tariffs on the other.
