The US Army and the online fitness and fashion community are mourning the loss of Staff Sgt. Michelle Young. The 34-year-old, who managed a prominent Instagram account, died by suicide, leaving behind a 12-year-old daughter.
Young enlisted in the Army at about 18 and served for 16 years, including two tours in Afghanistan. She balanced her military career with a strong presence on social media, amassing over 100,000 followers.
Young’s Instagram showcased her work with a veteran-focused athletic apparel company. She used her platform to advocate for improved mental health services for veterans and to address homelessness among ex-soldiers.
Young, a single mother, was known for her deep bond with her daughter, Gracie. Her social media was filled with their moments together, celebrating life’s milestones. Days before her passing, Young posted a heartfelt birthday message for Gracie on Instagram. Additionally, Young contributed to her community as a crisis trauma volunteer and was vocal about mental health, especially during Suicide Prevention Week.
The circumstances surrounding Young’s death remain unknown. Friends, however, highlighted the hidden battles of mental illness, particularly in military life. Sarah Maine, a close friend, expressed in a post the need for greater mental health support in the military.
A GoFundMe campaign for Young’s daughter has gathered nearly $25,000. The funds are intended to support Gracie, honouring Young’s legacy as a devoted mother.
