The United States emphasizes the importance of upholding democratic principles, freedom of expression, and the rule of law in Pakistan.

According to statements made by State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller amidst the country’s ongoing political unrest, stated, “We urge the respect and equal application of democratic principles, freedom of expression, and the rule of law worldwide,” in response to inquiries regarding the crackdown on political activists and journalists following the protests on May 9.

In response to the involvement of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in the violent protests, where party leader and former prime minister Imran Khan was arrested, the government has initiated mass arrests and filed cases under various laws, including terrorism laws.

The State Department spokesperson reiterated that the United States closely monitors Pakistan but maintains a neutral stance regarding any specific political candidate.

Furthermore, Miller expressed condolences and regret over the terrorist attack at the Hangu gas field, extending sympathies to the families affected. He stated, “We are saddened by reports of the deadly militant attack on the Pakistan oil and gas facility, resulting in the loss of four security personnel and two private guards.” He also wished for the swift recovery of those injured in the attack.

Miller emphasized that the United States is actively monitoring the situation in Pakistan.
