During a visit to Nepal, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres voiced a potent appeal for urgent civilian protection in Gaza, stating the situation is spiralling into desperation with each passing hour. His visit occurs against the backdrop of intensifying conflict in Gaza, ignited by the recent actions of Hamas against Israeli towns and the subsequent war declaration by Israel.

Condolences and Calls for Compliance with Humanitarian Law

In a heartfelt acknowledgement of the conflict’s global impact, Guterres, standing alongside Nepalese Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, extended his deepest condolences to the bereaved Nepalese families affected by the crisis. He underscored the universal principle that civilians should never be subjected to abduction, injury, or death, highlighting the tragic case of the missing Nepalese citizen, Bipin Joshi. The Secretary-General firmly advocated for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages in Gaza, emphasizing the sanctity of human life under the harrowing shadow of war.

Criticizing the Escalation Despite Calls for Humanitarian Truce

Guterres expressed profound dismay at the severe humanitarian conditions in Gaza, exacerbated by the intensification of military actions despite global consensus for a ceasefire. He condemned the unacceptable civilian casualty toll and implored all involved parties to adhere strictly to international humanitarian law, which dictates unequivocal rules for the preservation of human life during conflicts. “These laws,” Guterres stressed, “establish clear standards for respecting humanitarian needs and must not be twisted to suit temporary conveniences or objectives.”

Through his statements, the UN chief reinforced his unwavering commitment to advocating peace and strict compliance with international humanitarian principles, even amidst the complexities of ongoing conflict.
