The British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, is considering proposals to waive visa fees for top global talent. This initiative aims to attract elite scientists, academics, and digital experts to the UK.

According to a Financial Times report on September 22, 2025, sources from Number 10 and the Treasury confirm the plan. The move counters the recent stringent immigration policies of the United States.

Starmer’s “global talent task force” is developing ideas to stimulate economic growth. One suggestion includes eliminating fees for applicants affiliated with the world’s top five universities or holders of prestigious awards. Currently, the UK’s global talent visa fee stands at £766 ($1,030), with the same cost applied to partners and children. The proposed reforms specifically target high-end visas to attract innovators.

Following the US announcement on September 21, 2025, to impose $100,000 fees for new H-1B visas often used by tech companies, UK officials say this development has energised their policy considerations. The UK intends to act before the Budget announcement on November 26. Neither the Treasury nor Downing Street has issued formal comments yet.

The UK government aims to compete globally for the best talent. Removing visa fees could enhance innovation and create jobs, contrasting with the US’s tightening policies. Starmer’s Labour government seeks to accelerate growth following a slow economic start.

Keir Starmer’s proposal to waive visa fees for top talent signals the UK’s openness to global experts. As the US raises immigration costs, Britain positions itself as an attractive destination. Updates on this significant plan are expected with the upcoming Budget.
