LONDON: Britain’s Home Office has opened lead-sponsor applications for new UK refugee sponsorship routes covering eligible refugees in seven host countries, including Pakistan, with first arrivals expected in autumn 2027.
Pakistan’s inclusion concerns refugees seeking protection there. Pakistani nationals living in Pakistan do not qualify, while internally displaced people remain outside the routes.
The initial host countries are Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Malaysia, Egypt, Uganda and Kenya. Prospective beneficiaries must be outside their country of nationality or, if stateless, their former habitual residence.
They must have been present in a participating country and registered with the relevant authorities or the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) before October 1. Meeting those conditions alone does not establish eligibility.
Applicants must satisfy the applicable refugee or protection requirements, generally through UNHCR verification, alongside route-specific rules. Home Office identity, security and suitability checks remain mandatory, and sponsorship does not guarantee admission.
Applications opened on Thursday for UK organisations seeking accreditation as lead sponsors. This is not an opening for individuals to submit refugee visa applications directly.
Approved lead sponsors will oversee arrangements, assess sponsors’ capacity and submit applications to the Home Office. Eligible organisations include registered UK charities and community interest companies.
The three pathways provide different sponsorship arrangements:
- Named community sponsorship: Community groups identify refugees they wish to support and work through an approved lead sponsor.
- Refugee study: Universities sponsor eligible refugees with study offers, working with specialist voluntary and community organisations.
- Refugee work: Employers offer jobs and sponsor eligible refugees through arrangements supported by specialist organisations.
Community sponsorship groups must arrange accommodation, financial assistance and practical support. Guidance identifies five key group members responsible for delivering the arrangement.

For a family, sponsors may typically need access to £9,000–£15,000. However, this is a guide rather than a fixed threshold: lead sponsors assess funding against accommodation costs and individual circumstances. Sponsors cannot charge refugees for access to resettlement or profit from the arrangements.
Successful refugees will receive an initial five-year period of permission to stay on arrival. They can work and study immediately, while access to welfare benefits depends on the relevant eligibility rules.
Home Office policy provides a pathway towards settlement, but the government has not yet published the detailed requirements. It does not promise automatic permanent residence after the initial period.
These routes operate separately from the existing Community Sponsorship Scheme. Applications for the refugee work route are scheduled to open in spring 2027.
