BEIJING, China: Typhoon Noul struck southern Guangdong Province early on July 26, forcing more than 801,000 people to relocate before weakening to a tropical storm, state media reported.

The storm made landfall along the Huidong County coast in Huizhou at about 3:50 am China Standard Time, or 12:50 am PKT. Winds near its centre reached force 14, according to China’s National Meteorological Centre.

The latest relocation total more than doubled the 340,000 reported by Saturday afternoon. More than 801,000 people had moved to safety by Sunday, the Associated Press reported, citing the official Xinhua News Agency.

The National Development and Reform Commission allocated 100 million yuan, or about $14.7 million, for recovery work. The money will support repairs to roads, water facilities, schools and hospitals, according to Xinhua.

Noul also disrupted Hong Kong, where authorities reported at least 21 injuries. About 350 flights were cancelled on Sunday, leaving approximately 2,000 passengers stranded at the airport.
