Two women were murdered in cold blood on the pretext of ‘honour’ in at least two incidents in Rahim Yar Khan on Saturday night.

Police said Rashid Ali, a resident of Bahanwala village, Liaquatpur Tehsil, Rahim Yar Khan, had suspected that his sister-in-law was having an affair with one of their neighbours. On Saturday night, he had an altercation with his 32-year-old sister-in-law after which he used an axe to kill her. Police said that Ali had fled. They said they had sent the body to a mortuary for post-mortem examination and later handed it over to the family for burial. They said they were looking for Ali.

The second incident took place in Kotla village, Rahim Yar Khan, on Saturday night. Police said Abdul Hameed, Aashiq Hussain, Abdul Wahid, Muhammad Irshad, Kareem Bakhsh, Munir Ahmad, Muhammad Altaf, Muhammad Irshad, Ibrahim and Muhammad Umar attacked a woman and her alleged paramour at her house. Police said the woman was Hameed’s daughter-in-law.

Police said the men had beaten up the woman and the man before they used an axe to kill her.

Police said the man was critically injured and was taken to a hospital where doctors treating him said his condition was serious. They said they had sent the body to a mortuary for post-mortem examination.

Police said they had registered FIRs in both cases and were looking for the culprits.

Four commit/attempt suicide

A 17-year-old girl, resident of Sardargarh, near Rahim Yar Khan, committed suicide after arguing with her parents on Saturday night.

Police said that her parents had scolded her over some household chores that she had messed up. They said the girl had swallowed poison soon after the argument. She was taken to a hospital in Rahim Yar Khan where doctors pumped her stomach. However, the poison had done its damage by then and she died. The hospital administration handed over her body to her parents after completing legal formalities.

In another incident near Sultanpur, Taranda Sawaye Khan, a 32-year-old man committed suicide by lying down on a rail track. A freight train travelling from Lahore to Karachi ran him over. Police said the man used to have frequent arguments with his family and was under a lot of pressure from them. Police took the body into custody and handed it over to the family for burial after completing legal formalities. In Daska, Sialkot, a woman shot herself dead on Sunday after arguing with her family. Police said she was a mother of four.

In Satellite Town, Bahawalpur, a 22-year-old man attempted suicide by lying down on a rail track. However, some passers-by saw him and rescued him.
