In a developing story that highlights the cutthroat nature of the tech world, Twitter has considered initiating legal action against Meta, the parent company of Instagram. The contention revolves around Meta’s newly launched app, Threads.

As per a letter acquired by Semafor, Twitter alleges that Meta is illegally using its trade secrets and intellectual property. The letter, penned by Elon Musk’s attorney, Alex Spiro, puts forth the notion that Meta employed ex-Twitter employees privy to confidential details. It is surmised that this insider knowledge may have been utilized in developing Threads.
In the letter, Spiro expressed Twitter’s strong concerns, stating, “We have serious concerns that Meta has engaged in systematic, willful, and unlawful misappropriation of Twitter’s trade secrets and other intellectual property.”

Andy Stone, a spokesperson for Meta, refuted these accusations, claiming that no former Twitter employees were part of the Threads development team. He asserted, “No one on the Threads engineering team is a former Twitter employee — that’s just not a thing.”
Threads: A Bone of Contention Between Twitter and Meta
The introduction of Threads has fueled the competitive fire between Twitter, under Elon Musk’s stewardship, and Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta. Threads, a conversation app focusing on text, amassed significant attention, leading to millions of registrations within the first day following its release.
The app is regarded as a potential substitute for those users desiring to move away from Twitter, which has faced certain hurdles under Musk’s ownership. In response to Threads’ launch, Musk expressed his views on Twitter, including retweeting an image comparing the Threads logo to a tapeworm and commenting, “Metaphorically too.”

While the Threads app has garnered positive reviews and impressive download numbers, its future is not assured. Meta has a track record of launching standalone apps that are later discontinued, and Threads is still in its infancy.
Amid the clash, privacy concerns related to Threads have surfaced. Despite its global launch across over 100 countries, the app is conspicuously absent in the European Union due to stringent privacy laws. A few users, sceptical of Meta’s data collection practices, have cited the Digital Markets Act – legislation that sets rules for internet companies – as a factor discouraging them from fully adopting Threads.

Historically, the tech industry has been no stranger to legal battles over trade secrets. Prior cases, such as the dispute between Waymo and Uber, have had significant repercussions. Consequently, the outcome of the ongoing Twitter-Meta conflict may not only impact the two companies but also shape the broader landscape of social media.
