On July 22, 2025, Turkey introduced its groundbreaking Tayfun Block 4 hypersonic ballistic missile, marking a significant advancement in the nation’s defence technology. This development positions Turkey among a select few countries equipped with hypersonic weaponry. The new missiles can evade conventional missile defence systems due to their incredible speed and manoeuvrability.

Anadolu Ajansı reported that the Tayfun Block 4 weighs 2,300 kilograms and measures 6.5 meters in length. It has an impressive range of 800 kilometres, making it a formidable asset for strategic operations. Hypersonic missiles like this travel at speeds greater than Mach 5 (five times the speed of sound), allowing them to strike targets with precision and minimising the warning time for adversaries.

This missile represents Türkiye’s push toward self-reliance in military hardware, building on its growing aerospace industry. Experts note that hypersonic technology enhances deterrence capabilities while complicating interception efforts.

The unveiling comes amid rising geopolitical tensions, where nations increasingly invest in advanced weaponry. Türkiye’s achievement could reshape regional security dynamics, prompting responses from neighbouring countries and allies.

While official details on testing and deployment remain limited, the Tayfun Block 4 underscores Türkiye’s commitment to innovation in defence systems.
