Islamabad is experiencing growing concern as President-elect Donald Trump selects cabinet members for his second term, given the strong stances many nominees hold against Pakistan, particularly in contrast to their favourable views towards India.

Trump’s newly appointed cabinet has reportedly caused unease within Pakistan’s military and government circles, prompting a reassessment of the country’s strategy towards the United States.

Secretary of State Nominee Marco Rubio

Senator Marco Rubio, nominated for Secretary of State, has previously introduced legislation strongly aligned with India’s position on Pakistan. This proposed bill, which accuses Pakistan of sponsoring terrorism against India and suggests cutting off US security assistance to Islamabad, has alarmed Pakistani military officials. Rubio introduced the ‘US-India Defense Cooperation Act’ and advocated for enhanced defence cooperation with India, positioning it alongside top US allies for technology transfers and security collaboration to counter China’s regional influence.

National Security Adviser Nominee Mike Waltz

Mike Waltz, nominated for National Security Adviser, is another vocal critic of Pakistan. He has emphasized that Pakistan must abandon terrorism as a tool of foreign policy, pointing specifically to groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba. Waltz advocates for increased pressure on Pakistan to tackle terror financing and eliminate cross-border terrorism, views that resonate well with New Delhi’s policy stance.

US National Intelligence Director Nominee Tulsi Gabbard

Tulsi Gabbard, set to become the US Director of National Intelligence, has supported India’s stance on cross-border terrorism and has been critical of Pakistan’s actions in the past, including the sheltering of Osama Bin Laden. Her position strengthened after the 2019 Pulwama attack, where she supported India’s military response against Pakistan.

CIA Chief Nominee John Ratcliffe

John Ratcliffe, nominated as the next CIA Chief, is known for his hawkish views on China and Iran. He is also expected to monitor Pakistan’s overt and covert actions closely. His appointment signals continued scrutiny of Islamabad under Trump’s administration.

As Trump’s cabinet forms, the implications for Islamabad are stark, suggesting a challenging road ahead for maintaining the kind of bilateral relations it seeks with Washington. Analysts observe that the new cabinet’s composition sends a clear message of prioritizing ties with New Delhi over Islamabad, pressing Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to demonstrate more robust action against terrorism and terror financing.
