Toyota has revealed its strategy for using Lexus electric vehicles. According to a report in Nikkei on Friday, Japan’s Toyota Motor intends to establish a battery plant in Fukuoka, located in the southwestern region, to power its luxury Lexus vehicles.
Toyota aims to make Kyushu, the island where Fukuoka is located, a critical part of its battery supply chain for electric vehicles (EVs) and a key export hub for Asia.
A Toyota spokesperson acknowledged the Nikkei report but clarified that the company had not yet made a formal announcement. The spokesperson also noted that Toyota is enhancing its EV battery production capacity.
Toyota Motor Kyushu, a subsidiary of Toyota, manufactures Lexus vehicles at the Miyata plant.
Toyota has revealed plans to launch EVs with advanced batteries globally starting in 2026. Its specialized EV division, BEV Factory, will produce these vehicles.
By 2030, Toyota aims to sell 3.5 million EVs annually, nearly half of which will come from the BEV Factory. In 2023, the company reported sales of 104,000 EVs.
Details regarding the investment amount and the construction timeline for the new battery plant are still pending finalization, as reported by Nikkei, which did not disclose its sources.
Primearth EV Energy, another Toyota subsidiary specialising in manufacturing batteries for hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric vehicles, will operate the plant.
