Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Review Sees Social Decay

The Odyssey review argues that filmmaker Christopher Nolan has turned Homer’s ancient epic into a warning about war, declining empathy and the breakdown of social values.

The unnamed critic said Nolan remained close to Homer’s central story while adding themes intended to connect Odysseus’ journey with modern political and social tensions.

Actor Matt Damon plays Odysseus, who attempts to return home after the Trojan War. According to the review, Nolan presents him as a damaged veteran carrying guilt rather than an idealised hero.

#TheOdyssey didn’t need a Trojan Horse to break into the top of Friday’s box office charts.

The critic also highlighted Nolan’s reported inclusion of the Sea Peoples, historical groups that do not appear in Homer’s original narrative. The review interprets their presence as a symbol of the instability that follows when societies abandon shared values.

Another central theme is the ancient Greek tradition of hospitality towards strangers. The critic said Nolan uses that idea to emphasise empathy and mutual responsibility during periods of conflict.

The review also draws comparisons between the film’s characters and powerful figures in contemporary society.
