The celebrated Pakistani blockbuster “The Legend of Maula Jatt” (TLOMJ), starring Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan, will be officially released in India on October 2, 2024.

The film’s Instagram page announced, “The Legend Of Maula Jatt’s legacy lives on! Catch this cinematic masterpiece in Indian theatres from October 2, 2024. Book your tickets now!” The post also hinted at future updates, noting that cinema lists will be shared soon.

The release of TLOMJ in India was initially planned for December 2022, but it was indefinitely postponed, disappointing fans. A spokesperson for the INOX multiplex chain informed Dawn that the distributor did not provide a new date or reasons for the delay.

During the 2022 postponement, Zee Studios, which acquired the distribution rights for Delhi and Punjab, did not comment on the delay. Despite no official statements from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), sources suggested that theatre announcements would occur after receiving CBFC clearance.

Reports had previously indicated potential opposition from the Indian political party Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), although the Punjab Censor Board was expected to approve the film.

TLOMJ’s journey from Pakistan to India has faced numerous delays, but its success is clear. Since its debut on October 13, 2022, it quickly made history, surpassing Rs400 crore worldwide by August 2023, marking it the first Pakistani film to achieve this milestone.

With its upcoming release in October, TLOMJ will be the first Pakistani film to screen in Indian theatres in over a decade, following Shoaib Mansoor’s “Bol.” Given its significant acclaim and star-studded cast, the anticipation among Indian audiences is notably high.
