AUSTIN, United States: The Texas airport ablution probe was requested by Governor Greg Abbott, who asked the US Department of Justice to review facilities at two major airports.
Abbott asked federal officials to examine washing facilities at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston.
His office argued that airports receiving federal funds must comply with laws barring discrimination. Abbott questioned whether facilities designed for ritual washing before Islamic prayers met those requirements.
Muslims commonly wash their face, arms and legs before prayers. The Texas chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Texas) rejected Abbott’s position.

It said the facilities were open to all travellers and compared them with nursing rooms and interfaith prayer spaces. CAIR-Texas described the facilities as public accommodations rather than Muslim-only areas.
Abbott had earlier referred the airports to the US Transportation Secretary, Sean Duffy and threatened to cut state funding.

Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport later dropped plans for additional ablution stations. The airport said officials concluded the expected benefit might not be achieved.
The rights advocates say anti-Muslim rhetoric has increased in the United States, including during political campaigns. Those assessments remain claims by advocacy groups rather than findings established in the airport dispute.
