A massive explosion at Accurate Energetic Systems (AES), a munitions factory in Bucksnort, Tennessee, left 18 people missing and feared dead.
The blast, occurring 60 miles west of Nashville, completely destroyed the facility. Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis called it “one of the most devastating situations” in his career. He noted the building was “gone.”
The FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) are investigating, but the cause remains unclear. “There’s not going to be a short explanation,” Davis said at a press conference. Initially, 19 were reported missing, but WSMV later confirmed one person was found safe at home. Aerial footage from WTVF showed flames and smoke rising from debris.

AES manufactures explosives for military, aerospace, and demolition markets. It operates a 1,300-acre site with eight production buildings. The company offers jobs starting at $19/hour in a region with a $7.25 minimum wage. They expressed grief: “Our thoughts are with families, coworkers, and the community.” Hickman County Mayor Jim Bates told CNN the plant had no major safety issues. The last incident occurred in a 2014 explosion that killed one and injured three.
