A teenager who was in a coma since being hit in the head by a tear gas canister fired by police during the summer’s anti-government protests in Turkey has died. His family said 15-year old Berkin Elvan died in a hospital in Istanbul on Tuesday.
The protests were sparked by a police crackdown on protesters demanding more democratic freedoms. Police say some 3 million people took part in demonstrations from May to September.
Elvan was caught up in the protests on his way to a shop to buy bread.
