Billboard recently named Beyoncé the greatest pop star of the 21st century, igniting a spirited debate between her fans and those of Taylor Swift, who secured the second spot.
The publication highlighted Beyoncé’s extensive “25 years of influence, evolution, and impact.” This ranking did not sit well with Swift’s fervent followers, many of whom voiced their dissent on social media.
Swift’s fans swiftly contested the decision, with one asserting on X, “Taylor had more impact in the last 5 years than Beyoncé in her whole career ×5.” Others argued that Swift was at a disadvantage because she was younger, questioning the fairness of Billboard’s assessment. They also used the “influence, evolution, and impact” criteria to make a case for Swift, suggesting these qualities strongly apply to her.
Additionally, many criticized Billboard for not basing the rankings on quantifiable data. They cited the outlet’s acknowledgement of Swift’s numerical superiority in album sales, streaming, and touring. One fan sarcastically noted, “So the staff picked [Beyoncé], not reality. Got it.”
Despite these disagreements, Beyoncé’s supporters defended her accolade, citing her consistent relevance and impact over nearly three decades. One fan stated on X, “No one has had the staying power Beyoncé has demonstrated over the past three decades. She’s the biggest artist alive because of that.”

Interestingly, Beyoncé and Taylor Swift have shown mutual support for each other’s work. In late 2023, Beyoncé attended the premiere of Swift’s “Eras Tour” movie, and Swift was present at the London showing of Beyoncé’s “Renaissance” film. Following these gestures, Swift expressed gratitude for Beyoncé’s support on Instagram.
While their fans may be divided, it’s clear that both Beyoncé and Taylor Swift have made significant contributions to pop music and greatly respect each other’s achievements.
