PlayStation 6 base Model May Launch Without Disc Drive Rumored

The PlayStation 6 base model, no disc drive, rumour suggests Sony’s next-generation console could shift further toward digital gaming. According to a hardware leaker, the unconfirmed PS6 may launch without a built-in disc drive.

This move could mark a significant change for gamers who prefer collecting physical copies of their games. The same leak indicates that the PS6 base model might include only 1TB of internal SSD storage. This would match the storage capacity found in most PlayStation 5 models.

Typically, console generations bring larger storage upgrades. However, current industry constraints may limit improvements this time. Reports suggest that a global RAM shortage, driven in part by increased demand for AI technologies, could influence Sony’s hardware decisions. This situation may also affect the console’s expected launch timeline, with speculation about delays beyond late 2027.

Sony has already explored digital-only consoles with the PlayStation 5, which launched with a version lacking a disc drive. The company also introduced a separate disc drive attachment for users who wanted physical media support.

A similar approach could be adopted for the PS6, although no official confirmation has been provided. While digital game sales dominate modern marketplaces, many players still prefer physical copies. This preference is often linked to concerns about long-term access to digital purchases and the appeal of building a personal game collection.

Additionally, physical games can sometimes be purchased at lower prices, especially in the used market. It is important to note that these details are based on leaks and have not been confirmed by Sony. As development continues, specifications for the PlayStation 6 may change.

For now, gamers will have to wait for official announcements regarding the next generation of PlayStation hardware.
