Actress Sydney Sweeney has publicly addressed the intense controversy surrounding her recent American Eagle promotional campaign. These are her first detailed comments on a situation she calls surprising and misinterpreted.
The campaign, built on the pun “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans,” showcased her personal style. It quickly escalated into an intense online debate over genetics and privilege, and some people even falsely compared it to extremist propaganda, a link Sweeney firmly rejects.
“I was honestly surprised by the reaction,” Sweeney told People magazine. “I did it because I love the jeans and love the brand. I don’t support the views some people chose to connect to the campaign.”

Initially, Sweeney chose not to engage publicly, a strategy she now believes allowed the narrative to spiral. “In the past, my stance has been never to respond… but recently I have come to realise that my silence regarding this issue has only widened the divide, not closed it,” she explained.
While Sweeney remained quiet, American Eagle stated in early August that it would refocus the conversation. They asserted that the slogan was “and always was about the jeans.”

Sweeney shared that the sustained online scrutiny over the past year has been challenging. “You know this past year I have tried to be strong, but it’s been really hard at times,” she admitted. She aims to be more proactive in shaping her public image in the future. She stated, “I think this next year I want to be really intentional with showing people who I am and what I want, cause so many people can just get it wrong.”

The actress affirmed her core values, telling GQ, “I know who I am. I know what I value. I know that I’m a kind person.” Her comments aim to draw a line under the controversy and redirect attention to her work, including her upcoming film The Housemaid.
