Swiss Teachers Raise Concern Over School-Aged Children Still in Diapers

Swiss school teachers are raising concerns about an unexpected and increasing problem – children of school age who are still dependent on diapers.

Dagmar Rosler, head of the Swiss Federation of Teachers, expressed concern to the Swiss newspaper 20 Minuten. She stated, “Children as young as four are now attending school, so it’s unsurprising that some are still in diapers. However, it becomes worrisome when 11-year-olds arrive at school still using diapers.”

While the decreasing age at which children begin schooling may play a part, the issue also extends to older students who aren’t using diapers due to health reasons.

Experts, as reported, urge it’s essential to determine whether this behavior stems from a developmental psychological disorder or a child not being toilet trained.

Rosler stressed that teachers must handle this issue with sensitivity and discretion. She emphasized, “The child should never be belittled. Even in the absence of health issues, it’s vital to discuss with the parents to address and solve the problem, holding them accountable.”

Felix Hof, a psychotherapist, echoed these sentiments, underscoring the importance of bringing this issue to parents’ attention. He said, “Various factors could explain why primary school-aged children are still dependent on diapers. If it isn’t due to a physical impairment, such behavior could suggest neglect or an extremely stressed family situation.”
