Elon Musk has pledged a SpaceX share giveaway potentially worth more than $10 billion, promising one of his shares to every child in the United States in 2027.
Writing on X on Monday, Musk announced the proposed distribution without detailing eligibility rules or an application process.
“I will give one of my SpaceX shares to every kid in America.” He described the pledge as the first of further giveaways, but did not specify what those might involve.
At SpaceX’s October 16 closing price of $146.03, that would be roughly $146 per child. Using the supplied US Census Bureau estimate of more than 72 million children under 18, the total would exceed $10.5 billion.
However, those figures are a valuation snapshot, not a guaranteed payout. Recipients would receive shares, and their value could change before any transfer.
SpaceX shares subsequently closed Monday at $147.96, up $1.93 from the previous session.
Musk’s initial announcement did not establish whether every person under 18 would qualify, how parents would participate or what restrictions might apply to selling the stock.
Later reporting linked the proposed distribution to government-backed investment accounts for children, although the detailed terms of Musk’s programme remain to be clarified.

His announcement followed artificial intelligence company Anthropic’s pledge to allocate 5% of its shares to a public benefit fund. Musk favoured distributing shares directly to members of the public instead.
SpaceX went public earlier this year. Its operations include the Starlink satellite network and reusable rockets.
