Most wars occur on Earth, but battles in space, particularly on the moon, may soon be a reality. Global powers are considering extending military operations into space, transforming science fiction into reality.

California Representative Ken Calvert, chair of the House Appropriations Defense Subcommittee, suggests that the US military might soon operate on the moon. This move aims to counter potential threats from Russia and China.

Today, I joined my fellow co-Chair of the California Aerospace Caucus, @RepTedLieu, in issuing the following statement:

Happy National Space Day! For decades, space exploration and research has helped to set the United States apart as an industrial and scientific leader in…

— Rep. Ken Calvert (@KenCalvert) May 3, 2024

The Washington Times reports that Calvert expressed concerns about China militarizing the moon and Russia deploying a megaton bomb in low Earth orbit.

During a Washington event with government and tech leaders, Calvert discussed the US Space Force’s potential lunar missions. “Space Force will be actively involved in going to the moon at some point,” he stated.

The Hill and Valley Forum is a bipartisan discussion between lawmakers and innovators. Yesterday, I participated in a panel hosted by @zebulgar from @vardaspace, where I spoke about my efforts to leverage investments that will more rapidly deliver innovations to our warfighters. pic.twitter.com/B90pGcA2sz

He also referenced a video from China’s National Space Administration, showing plans for a moon base by the International Lunar Research Station. Calvert believes China will likely militarize the moon, prompting the US to establish a lunar base, possibly within this decade.

In 2021, Russia and China announced plans for the International Lunar Research Station.

Furthermore, Calvert highlighted reports of Russia’s potential deployment of a megaton bomb into low Earth orbit. He described this as a form of global blackmail, threatening severe repercussions for low Earth orbit and beyond.
