Southern Hip-Hop Legend DJ Unk Passes Away

The hip-hop community mourns the sudden loss of DJ Unk, born Anthony Leonard Platt, who passed away at the age of 43.

Known for hits like “Walk It Out” and “2 Step,” DJ Unk’s influence on the Southern hip-hop scene and the snap music subgenre is undeniable.

DJ Unk first gained major attention with his debut single, “Walk It Out.” This track soared to the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and set the stage for his subsequent hit, “2 Step.” Both songs cemented his reputation and became staples in Southern hip-hop clubs.

DJ Unk began his music career with Southern Style DJs and signed with Big Oomp Records in 2000. His debut album, “Beat’n Down Yo Block!,” released in 2006, featured these hits and made a significant impact. His subsequent album, “2econd Season,” launched in 2008, achieved notable success, reaching number 15 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.

Sherkita Long-Platt, his spouse, conveyed the heartbreaking news on social media, articulating the profound grief their family is experiencing and requesting privacy as they navigate this difficult period. “Please respect me and my family. I just lost my husband, and my kids just lost their father. Our life will never be the same,” she stated.

Tributes from all corners of the music industry have been flowing in, celebrating DJ Unk’s legacy and contributions. Korey “Big Oomp” Roberson, the founder of Big Oomp Records, remembered him as a “legendary DJ, rapper, and producer” and a key figure at the label.
