GROBLERSDAL: Gift Duba, 34, appeared in court on Friday over alleged illegal hunting in Limpopo. The Zimbabwean man arrested on Wednesday remains in custody.
Duba faces charges of illegal hunting, possession of game meat and contravening South Africa’s Immigration Act. South African Police Service (SAPS) officers arrested him during an intelligence-led operation in the Sekhukhune District.
Police acted on information about suspected illegal hunting at a farm along Vaalfontein Road in the Groblersdal policing area. Officers first searched a homestead in Monageng, Bloompoort village.
They found meat in a refrigerator that they suspected was connected to the alleged killing of two sable antelopes. Investigators then went to the farm and found two dead sable antelopes.
Police described them as old bucks and valued them at R44 000. Officers also found meat cut into strips and hanging from trees to dry for biltong.
Police said the dried meat was meant to be collected after it lost moisture, making it lighter to transport. Duba appeared before the Groblersdal Magistrate’s Court on Friday and was remanded in police custody.
