Millions of Americans will receive new Social Security debit cards as Fifth Third Bank replaces Comerica Bank in the Direct Express program.
The change affects about 3.6 million beneficiaries who use the prepaid Direct Express Debit Mastercard.
The update will not change payment amounts or payment dates. The US Treasury selected Fifth Third Bank as the new financial agent for the program.
New enrollments started this month. Existing users will begin receiving new cards this summer.
The full account transition will continue through late 2026 and into 2027. Beneficiaries who receive direct deposit into their bank accounts will not be affected by this card change.
