The Sindh government has announced a public holiday in educational institutions on January 17 to mark Shab-e-Meraj.
According to a notification from the Sindh Education and Literacy Department, all public and private schools, colleges, and other educational institutions across Sindh will remain closed on that day.
The holiday will be observed throughout the province, including Karachi, in line with the religious significance of the occasion.
Shab-e-Meraj is observed on the 27th night of the Islamic month of Rajab. It commemorates the sacred night journey of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
According to Islamic tradition, the Prophet was taken from the Holy Kaaba in Makkah to Masjid al-Aqsa in Jerusalem. From there, he ascended to the heavens, where he received divine commandments.
The term Meraj derives from the Arabic word Urooj, meaning “ascension.” The event holds a central place in Islamic history and represents spiritual elevation and closeness to Allah.
Muslims across the country mark the night with special prayers, recitation of the Holy Quran, and voluntary fasting, reflecting its deep spiritual importance.
