The Sindh government is digitising its food safety enforcement. Officials plan to implement an e-challan system within the Sindh Food Authority (SFA). This model mirrors the successful digital system used for traffic violations in the province. The decision followed a high-level meeting on departmental reforms.
Sindh’s Minister for Food, Mehboob-uz-Zaman, chaired the meeting. PPP Women’s Wing Chairperson Faryal Talpur also attended the session. Officials provided detailed briefings on several digital initiatives. These included online business registration and a digital complaint management system.
Minister Zaman stated that this digitisation will offer citizens more efficient services. It will also ensure greater transparency in the authority’s operations. He updated Chairperson Talpur on recent actions against substandard food items. The briefing also covered the department’s veterinary stock management policy.

The move towards e-challans follows recent enforcement actions. Earlier this year, the SFA conducted a major raid on a renowned Karachi hotel. Inspectors targeted a five-star hotel chain near PIDC. They uncovered serious food safety violations and unhygienic practices during the operation.

Authorities seized 25 kilograms of expired meat from the premises. They also confiscated outdated buttercream and other substandard food items. The kitchen and washing areas failed to meet basic hygiene standards. These conditions raised immediate public health concerns.
The inspection report confirmed a failure to follow basic food safety protocols. Unhygienic practices were prevalent in critical preparation and cleaning zones. These findings prompted the SFA to file a formal legal case. The authority approached the South Civil Judge’s court in Karachi.
