The Sindh Education Department has imposed a complete ban on using private school premises for residential or commercial purposes, reinforcing that school buildings must serve educational activities only.

The department stated that establishing shops, housing units, or any non-academic facilities within school premises constitutes a serious violation of the law. Authorities clarified that private school buildings can no longer be used for any purpose other than teaching and learning.

To ensure enforcement, the department will begin inspections of all private schools across the province. Each institution must submit a valid structural fitness certificate. Schools operating from unsafe, dilapidated, or hazardous buildings must vacate immediately.

Rising drug usage among Pakistan’s youth is alarming: recent reports indicate up to 44% of university students use drugs, with 17 million aged 18-31 struggling with addiction, and ANF warning that millions remain vulnerable in educational institutions.

Officials warned that violations could result in the suspension or cancellation of school registration. Authorities may also seal institutions found to be running commercial or residential operations on school premises. In case of any accident on campus, the school administration will bear full legal responsibility.

Earlier, the Sindh government issued strict fire safety instructions for private schools. The Directorate of Inspection and Registration of Private Institutions directed schools to comply fully with fire prevention and safety standards.

Under the new rules, schools must install fire alarms, smoke detectors, and fire extinguishers. Administrations must keep emergency exits and staircases clear at all times and conduct regular inspections of electrical systems and other high-risk areas.

Schools must also prominently display fire evacuation plans on their premises. Education officials stressed that strict action will follow against institutions that fail to meet safety and compliance requirements.
