Shohei Ohtani, who is celebrated as a once-in-a-lifetime talent, has signed the largest sports contract in history with the LA Dodgers.
According to sources like SportsKeeda and ClutchPoints, the Japanese pitcher and designated hitter’s net worth was estimated at $50 million before the record-breaking deal.
In 2022, Ohtani secured a one-year contract with the Los Angeles Angels worth $30 million, supplemented by endorsements totalling approximately $35 million, positioning him as the highest-earning baseball player off the field.
However, on December 9, 2023, he inked a 10-year, $700 million contract with the Dodgers, surpassing the previous record held by Mike Trout’s $426.5 million contract with the Angels. Ohtani’s contract exceeds Patrick Mahomes’s $450 million, 10-year agreement with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Ohtani’s landmark deal involves complex payment terms. It is structured such that he will receive $2 million annually until 2034, followed by $68 million annually for the following decade, with no interest on deferred payments. Additionally, Ohtani continues to secure substantial earnings from endorsements, including agreements with New Balance, Fanatics, Topps, and various companies in Japan, potentially pushing his annual income to $100 million.
Yet, amidst his economic and sporting triumphs, Ohtani’s health remains a concern. Known for his injury susceptibility, he played in only 72% of the Angels’ games over six seasons. Despite this, he made sports history as the first player to achieve 54 home runs and 59 stolen bases in a single season, although he suffered an injury during the second game of the World Series against the Yankees.
At 30, Ohtani is at the zenith of his career. Given the longevity typical of professional baseball players, it is highly probable that he will continue to play at a high level well into the future, likely fulfilling the tenure of his contract with the Dodgers.
