The Prince Sultan Air Base attack reportedly wounded at least 12 American soldiers, including two seriously, according to U.S. media reports cited. The strike targeted the Saudi base with at least one missile and several drones, as Iran continued retaliatory attacks on Gulf countries it accuses of supporting U.S. strikes that began on February 28.

The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, citing unidentified officials, reported that the soldiers were inside a building at the base when it was struck. Several aerial refuelling planes parked nearby were also damaged in the attack.

Iran’s Prince Sultan Air Base Attack

According to the AFP, the strike on Prince Sultan Air Base involved both missiles and drones. The Wall Street Journal reported that U.S. personnel were inside a building when it was struck.

Saudi Arabia had previously intercepted several missiles fired near the base. At the time of reporting, the Pentagon and U.S. Central Command had not immediately responded to AFP requests for comment.

The reported strike comes amid an expanding regional conflict. 13 U.S. military service members have been killed since fighting with Iran began, with seven deaths in the Gulf and six in Iraq. More than 300 others have been wounded.

On the Iranian side, the government had not released an updated casualty toll. However, a U.S.-based activist group said on March 23 that around 1,167 Iranian troops had been killed, and the status of 658 troops remained unknown. AFP said it could not independently verify those figures because of reporting restrictions in Iran.

An earlier reported attack in Saudi Arabia. It says the CIA station at the U.S. Embassy in Riyadh was hit by a suspected Iranian drone on March 4, 2026, according to a source familiar with the matter cited by Reuters.

Saudi Arabia’s defence ministry said the embassy was struck by two drones, causing a limited fire and some material damage. That earlier incident underscored the broader risk to U.S. sites in the kingdom as the conflict intensified.
