Representative Sheila Jackson Lee, Texas Democrat and Chairperson of the Pakistan Caucus, passed away at 74.

Sheila Jackson Lee had been battling pancreatic cancer, a diagnosis confirmed by American media. She was from Houston, Texas, and was recognized as one of the longest-serving Democratic members of Congress.

Her political career began in 1994 when she won her first primary election, defeating four-term Democrat Craig Washington. Over her extensive career, she became known for her dedication and service to her constituency and the broader public.

In September 2022, the Government of Pakistan awarded Sheila Jackson Lee the prestigious Hilal-e-Pakistan recognition of her significant contributions to Pakistan and its people. This honour highlighted her outstanding efforts in fostering relations between the United States and Pakistan.

Sheila Jackson Lee was known for her enthusiastic participation in public gatherings and deep commitment to her constituents in Houston. She was especially noted for her tireless efforts to secure federal funding for her district. One of her notable achievements was in 2009, when she successfully lobbied for a $1 billion grant to improve the city’s lighting system, reflecting her commitment to enhancing the quality of life in her community.
