Country-pop singer Shania Twain has described the candid advice she gave rock singer Jon Bon Jovi before his June 2022 vocal-fold surgery, including a warning that he would remain awake during the procedure.
Twain told People in an interview published on July 31 that Bon Jovi contacted her while she was experiencing problems with her laryngeal nerve. She shared information about surgeon Robert Sataloff and details of her own procedure.
“It’s an open-throat surgery, and you have to be awake,” Twain said. She encouraged Bon Jovi to consider every possible outcome because the operation offered no guarantee of restoring his voice.
Twain underwent vocal fold medialization in 2018 after Lyme disease damaged the nerves controlling her voice. She said the procedure allowed her to continue singing, although her voice became raspier and never returned to its previous sound.

Bon Jovi underwent the same procedure in June 2022 to address loose vocal cords. He told People in April 2024 that Twain had reassured him before the operation and called her his “spirit sister.”
The singers later appeared together at the 2024 MusiCares Person of the Year Gala in Los Angeles, where Twain performed “Bed of Roses” during a tribute to Bon Jovi.
Twain released her 12-track seventh studio album, Little Miss Twain, on July 24, 2026, according to her official store.
