A sessions court sentenced two years imprisonment and fined of Rs. 30,000 for cyber crime activities.
According to the Federal Investigation Agency, the suspect was proven guilty of uploading private pictures of girls on social media and the internet, which caused immense emotional stress and disrespect to their families.
This is considered to be one of the first convictions under the Cybercrime bill which was passed in parliament in August. The Prevention of Electronic Crimes Bill (PECB) 2015 has also been mired in controversy ever since.
According to the bill, a person can be imprisoned for up to three years, and fined Rs5 million or both for obtaining, selling, possessing, transmitting or using another person’s identity information without authorisation.
Also, if someone’s identity information is used without authorisation, then they may apply to authorities to secure, destroy or prevent transmission of their information.
