ZAPORIZHZHIA, Ukraine: A Russian strike killed six people and wounded at least 19 overnight Tuesday. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine said Moscow used North Korean ballistic and Zircon missiles.

Journalists reported explosions around 12:30 a.m. local time on Aug. 11. The barrage hit this southeastern city and Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, according to the Kyiv Independent.

“The city was struck with North Korean ballistic missiles, Zircons, and guided aerial bombs,” Zelenskyy wrote on X. Neither the Associated Press nor Reuters independently confirmed the missiles’ origin.

Zaporizhzhia regional governor Ivan Fedorov said the Russian strike damaged homes, garages, industrial sites and other infrastructure. He posted photographs showing burning buildings and vehicles.

Ukraine’s Air Force said Russia also launched 120 drones and several missile types across the country. It reported destroying or jamming 98 drones, according to Ukrainska Pravda.

Kyiv officials said missiles damaged an infectious-diseases hospital and businesses in the capital. One person suffered injuries while hospital staff and patients had taken shelter.

The Associated Press reported three more deaths in Ukraine’s central Dnipropetrovsk region. The attacks raised the nationwide overnight toll to at least nine.

Russia’s Defence Ministry said its forces struck transport hubs, logistics sites and defence-industry targets in Kyiv and Zaporizhzhia. It did not address Zelenskyy’s claim about North Korean weapons.

Zelenskyy called for tougher sanctions and more air-defence support. Emergency crews continued working at the Zaporizhzhia impact sites Tuesday morning.
