On June 26, 2025, Portuguese football icon Cristiano Ronaldo signed a two-year contract extension with Al Nassr, ensuring his stay with the Saudi Pro League club until the 2026–27 season.

The announcement of CR7 and Al Nassr, shared via a vibrant social media post, dispels weeks of speculation about his future. Ronaldo, who will turn 42 during the contract, reaffirmed his commitment with a passionate message: “A new chapter begins. Same passion, same dream. Let’s make history together.”

Ronaldo’s original two-and-a-half-year deal, signed in 2022, was set to expire this month. Consequently, his earlier comment that the “chapter was over” sparked rumours of a move elsewhere. For instance, FIFA President Gianni Infantino fueled speculation about a short-term deal with clubs like Botafogo, River Plate, or Wydad AC for the expanded FIFA Club World Cup. However, Ronaldo chose to remain with Al Nassr. In a club video captioned “The story continues,” he walked along a palm-lined beach, declaring, “Al Nassr, forever.”

Al Nassr’s Challenges

The extension coincides with upheaval at Al Nassr. The club recently sacked head coach Stefano Pioli, appointed in September 2024, for failing to secure the Saudi Pro League title. Al Nassr, champions only once in the last decade, finished third last season. As a result, they will compete in the AFC Champions League Two in 2025–26, Asia’s equivalent of the UEFA Europa League. Despite these struggles, Ronaldo’s commitment signals his belief in the club’s potential.

Ronaldo’s initial move to Al Nassr in 2022 elevated the Saudi Pro League’s global profile, attracting other top players. His decision to stay reinforces the league’s growing stature. Moreover, it underscores Ronaldo’s drive to compete, even as he enters his 25th professional season. Fans anticipate his leadership will push Al Nassr toward domestic and regional success.
