In the first ODI against New Zealand, Pakistan captain Babar Azam’s half-century and Mohammad Rizwan’s 77 unbeaten runs helped to win the first ODI.
New Zealand, batting first, scored 255/9 in 50 overs after losing Devon Conway for a golden duck in the first over. Finn Allen tried to accelerate his innings after an early setback, but Mohammad Wasim Jr. ended his 29-run knock.
Kane Williamson and Daryl Mitchell added 32 runs for the third wicket before Usama Mir bowled Williamson.
Mitchell and Tom Latham batted for over 12 overs after the captain’s dismissal to frustrate Pakistan bowlers.
Mitchell and Latham’s fourth-wicket partnership threatened the hosts, but Nawaz bowled a perfect Jaffa to dismiss Mitchell for 36 off 55 balls.
Usama’s second ODI wicket followed Latham’s wicket. The wicketkeeper-batsman scored a 52-ball 42 with three boundaries.
Glenn Phillips and Michael Bracewell rescued their team with a 76-run partnership.
The duo was looking to accelerate late in the innings before Phillips mistimed a lofted shot and was out. Instead, one boundary and a six helped him score 37 off 53 balls.
Naseem removed Phillips, then Bracewell and Henry Shipley in succession.
Bracewell scored 43 off 42 balls with four fours and a six.
Mitchell Santner and Tim Southee added 31 runs as their side struggled at 220/8 in the 46th over before Naseem completed his second five-wicket haul in ODIs.
Naseem took five wickets, Usama took two for 42, and Nawaz and Wasim Jr. dismissed a batter.
