Rescue, relief operation underway in Chitral as death toll hits 41

Rescue and relief activities have been accelerated in Drosh area of Chitral.

A spokesman of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Disaster Management Authority told Radio Pakistan Peshawar correspondent that the affected families have been shifted to safer places.

They have been provided with relief goods, including food items. Forty-one including eight security personnel have died due to heavy rain and flash floods. Five people have been injured while twenty-six people are missing. Forty one houses have been completely washed away while thirty-seven were partially damaged.

Efforts are underway to recover the remaining bodies.

Meanwhile, Swat-Shangla road has been reopened for traffic. The road was blocked due to landsliding last night.

Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif has directed the National Disaster Management Authority and other concerned departments to step up rescue and relief efforts in the flood-hit areas of Chitral.

In a statement, he said the people who are stranded and flooded away must be reached and rescued.

The Prime Minister also ordered to keep him updated on the flood situation in Chitral.

Nawaz Sharif expressed deep grief and sorrow over death of forty-one people caused by heavy rain and flash flood in Drosh area of Chitral. A mosque and several houses were washed away in the flood.

He prayed to Almighty Allah to bless the departed souls with eternal peace and grant courage to the bereaved families to bear the irreparable loss.

Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Iqbal Zafar Jhagra has expressed sorrow and grief over the losses due to rain and floods in Chitral.

He has directed the authorities concerned to step up relief measures in the affected areas to provide immediate relief to the needy people.

He also directed the administration to take all precautionary measures to save the lives and properties of the people.

Meanwhile, emergency has been declared in Drosh area of Chitral to cope with the situation.

People of the affected areas have been shifted to safer places. They are being provided with relief goods, including tents and food items.

Eight dead bodies that had been washed away were recovered from Afghanistan on Sunday.

Search is in progress for the remaining dead bodies.

Army troops are busy in relief and rescue operation in Chitral since Saturday night.

According to ISPR, the Troops provided Food, tents and medical aid to affected people in Ursoon village.

Lama helicopter of Army made five trips from Chitral to Ursoon and evacuated injured.

Search operation for missing persons is in progress.

Radio Pakistan correspondent Javed Iqbal reports from Chitral that rescue, relief and rehabilitation work is in full swing in flood-affected areas in Chitral.

The affected people are being provided food and non-food items by the teams of army and local administration.

Deputy Commissioner Chitral is personally monitoring the rescue, relief and rehabilitation activities. The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has announced financial assistance for the heirs of those who died and injured due to flash flood in Chitral.

According to the spokesman of the Provincial Government, Mushtaq Ahmad Ghani, three hundred thousand rupees will be given to each family of those who lost their lives, whereas one hundred thousand rupees will be given to every injured person.

Similarly, one hundred thousand rupees will be given for every completely damaged house and fifty thousand rupees for partially damaged house. (APP)
