The Punjab Kings, a cricket team in the Indian Premier League (IPL) owned by Bollywood actress Preity Zinta, found themselves at the centre of a humorous mix-up during the player auction for the IPL 2024 season. The incident quickly turned the franchise into a topic of jokes among cricket fans and netizens.

The confusion began when uncapped player Shashank Singh was brought up for auction with a base price of INR 2 million. After a brief discussion, Preity Zinta and her team decided to bid for him. They successfully acquired Singh since other franchises showed no interest. However, the PBKS team soon realized they had mistaken this Shashank Singh for another player with the same name.

Fantastic scenes here as the notoriously inept Punjab Kings manage to not only purchase a player they didn’t want, (Shashank Singh), they also admit to this in front of literally everyone. Singh we can guess is sat at home wondering whether to show up in March. #IPLAuction #pbks pic.twitter.com/PtLQv9t07H

Despite their efforts to reverse the bid, auctioneer Mallika Sagar confirmed the purchase, stating that the hammer had already come down, and they had to include the player in their roster for the upcoming season.

Public Reaction and Punjab Kings’ IPL History

Following this mix-up, the Punjab Kings became the subject of numerous jokes and memes online. Fans reacted humorously to the blunder, highlighting the franchise’s history in the IPL. It is noteworthy that Punjab Kings, formerly Kings XI Punjab, have not won an IPL title yet, with their best performance being runners-up in the 2014 edition.

The Punjab Kings’ squad for IPL 2024, including the mistakenly acquired Shashank Singh, comprises a mix of experienced and new players, setting the stage for what fans hope will be a successful season.
