Punjab government on Monday requested Election Commission of Pakistan to postpone by-elections in NA-149.

The National Assembly seat in Multan had fallen vacant after former Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf president Makhdoom Javed Hashmi resigned and announced that he would contest the elections as an independent candidate. The ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) is believed to be backing him in by-elections.

In a request to the poll body, the provincial government said the elections should be delayed due to security reasons.

The by-polls for the seat are scheduled for October 16.
